# Slack AI assistant

> Ask the GrowthBook AI assistant about experiments and Feature Flags from Slack. Mention @GrowthBook in a channel or send it a direct message.

The GrowthBook AI assistant answers questions about your GrowthBook organization right in Slack. Ask it which experiments are running, what Feature Flags you have, or how a test is doing. It can also make changes for you, but only after you confirm them.

The assistant runs as you. It uses your linked GrowthBook account, so it can only see and change what your account can.

## Requirements

* The [Slack app is connected](https://docs.growthbook.io/integrations/slack#connect-your-slack-workspace) to your organization.
* AI is turned on for your organization in **Settings → General**.
* **GrowthBook Cloud:** available on every plan, with no AI provider setup needed. AI usage limits depend on your plan.
* **Self-hosted:** requires an Enterprise license and an AI provider API key, set with an [environment variable](https://docs.growthbook.io/self-host/env.md#ai-provider-api-keys) or in **Settings → AI & Prompts**. Slack must also be able to reach your API server over HTTPS. See [Self-hosted Slack setup](https://docs.growthbook.io/integrations/slack/self-hosted.md) and [AI integrations](https://docs.growthbook.io/integrations/ai.md).

## Turn the assistant on or off

The **AI assistant** switch is next to your workspace name on the Slack integration page. It's on by default whenever AI is enabled for your organization.

Turning it off stops the assistant from answering in that workspace. Notifications keep working either way.

If the switch is grayed out, AI is turned off for your organization. An admin can turn it on in **Settings → General**.

## Link your Slack account

Before the assistant answers you, link your Slack account to your GrowthBook account. You only need to do this once per organization.

1. In Slack, send a direct message to **GrowthBook** or mention `@GrowthBook` in a channel. You can also send `link account`.
2. GrowthBook replies with a private **Link my account** link that only you can see.
3. Open the link and sign in to GrowthBook if you're asked. Make sure you're in the organization connected to the Slack workspace.
4. Check the account and organization shown on the page, then click **Link my account**.
5. Go back to Slack and send your question again.

The link expires after 15 minutes. If it expires, send `link account` again to get a new one.

To link a different GrowthBook account, sign in as that account first, then send `link account` again. On the confirmation page, click **Replace linked account**.

To see or remove your links, open your user menu in GrowthBook and choose **My Slack links**.

## Ask questions

You can talk to the assistant in two places:

* **Direct messages.** Open GrowthBook in Slack and send a message. The **Messages** tab offers starter prompts such as "What experiments are running right now?" and "What Feature Flags do we have?"
* **Channels.** Invite the app with `/invite @GrowthBook`, then mention `@GrowthBook` in your message. To ask a follow-up in a thread, mention `@GrowthBook` again.

The assistant only reads messages that are sent to it directly or that mention it. It doesn't read other channel messages.

The assistant posts *Thinking…* and then replaces it with the answer in a thread. Each person gets their own conversation, and the assistant handles one request at a time per thread. A request that takes longer than 15 minutes is stopped. Send a new message to continue.

Example questions:

* What experiments are running right now?
* What Feature Flags do we have?
* Which experiments in the Checkout project are ending soon?

## Confirm changes

When you ask the assistant to change something, it doesn't act right away. It posts a summary of the change with **Confirm** and **Cancel** buttons first.

* Only the person who asked can confirm. Anyone else who clicks gets "This action isn't yours to confirm."
* If a change bypasses GrowthBook's warnings, the confirmation says so.
* If you send a newer request before you confirm, the older confirmation is replaced.

Some changes aren't available from Slack. For example, you can create a new dashboard but not update or delete an existing one.

## Troubleshooting

**"This Slack workspace isn't connected to GrowthBook yet."**
An admin needs to [connect the workspace](https://docs.growthbook.io/integrations/slack#connect-your-slack-workspace).

**"The GrowthBook assistant is turned off for this workspace."**
An admin can turn on the **AI assistant** switch in GrowthBook under **Settings → Slack**.

**"AI is disabled for this organization."**
An admin can turn on AI in **Settings → General**.

**"AI is enabled, but no usable AI provider API key is configured."**
This only happens on self-hosted GrowthBook. An admin needs to add an AI provider key with an [environment variable](https://docs.growthbook.io/self-host/env.md#ai-provider-api-keys) or in **Settings → AI & Prompts**.

**"Your linked GrowthBook account no longer has access to the connected organization."**
Your account was removed from the organization, or you linked an account that isn't a member. Ask an admin to add you back, or send `link account` to link a different account.

**The assistant doesn't answer in a channel.**
Check that `@GrowthBook` was invited to the channel and that you mentioned it in your message.

**The assistant answers in a channel that doesn't get notifications.**
That's expected. Notifications and the assistant are configured separately. The assistant works in any channel `@GrowthBook` has been invited to.
